Internship Experiences

This page will outline current M.A. student’s experiences in their Internship. NPSIA offers internship experiences for students in their first year during the Winter semester.

1. NICOLE HALSETH – Mines Action Canada

I am a first year Master’s candidate with NPSIA in the Conflict Analysis and Resolution stream. NPSIA, as part of its focus on professional development, offered students the opportunity to intern with organizations and firms around Ottawa in January 2016. I had the opportunity to participate such an internship with Mine’s Action Canada.

Mine’s Action Canada is an NGO based in Ottawa working towards an end to landmines, cluster bombs, and explosive remnants of war around the world. Mine’s Action is part of an international civil society network, and has been instrumental in stopping the use and proliferation of these weapons, as well as reporting on their status and effects. My time with Mine’s Action has allowed me to pursue interesting research, expand my professional networks, and increase my marketable skills.

I worked with Mine’s Action on Casualties Data and Victim Assistance research. Through this, I scanned annual media reports and compiled data about landmine and cluster munitions victims around the world, as well as assessed the status of victim assistance in each affected country. In addition to being personally quite interesting, the research allowed me to meaningfully contribute to Mine’s Action annual Landmine and Cluster Munitions Monitor report and advance civil society monitoring in this area.

I also had the opportunity to participate in meetings with groups such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, putting me in contact with academics and officials in Ottawa and internationally. Finally, through Mine’s Action, I have been learning the basics of graphics design and putting together a portfolio. These skills and experiences have been of great use in developing my resume and personal capabilities.

Opportunities like this are exactly the reason I came to NPSIA, and I haven’t been disappointed in the slightest!
